The Beacons, Highcross Shopping Centre, Leicester

The Beacons is a permanent site-specific sculpture that connects Highcross Shopping centre with the wider community of Leicester. Seven tall video totems form a glowing three dimensional lantern to draw people into St Peters Square. From a distance, along the lanes that converge on the square, the surfaces of the sculpture align to create a legible canvas for imagery and illumination. Up-close the imagery is fragmented, abstracted, overlapped and pixelated. The sculpture’s surface is brought to live with interactive ambient animation that responds to local weather and the proximity of passers-by. It doubles as a canvas for specially commissioned moving image artworks and a programmable backdrop to public calendar events in the city.

The sculpture was commissioned by Hammerson and was a collaboration with Levitate Architecture and Design Studio. It was fabricated and installed by ADI-TV.  The ambient animation was a developed with The Workers.
